Rawhide Riders

Rawhide Riders team members, Phil Noon, John Copley, Jonny Watchorn, Billy Jessop and Dave Penford completed their epic 961 mile cycle ride from Lands End to John O Groats on Wednesday 30th June, taking them 10 days to complete.

They have so far raised around £25,000 for Cancer Research and St Barnabas Hospice, and will hand over the money soon after a charity concert on Jul 16th which they hope will bring the total to over £30,000. The charity concert features local acts Crazy Ape, The System and the Boom Choir Project, and is being held at Belvoir Cricket ground Knipton on 16th July, where ticket price includes a hog roast. There is even a free bus home to Grantham town centre.

Over their epic journey the Rawhide Riders picked up £500 in collections from well wishers en route due to attracting attention in their bright pink shirts, provided by Grantham Clothing Company. They completed the 961 mile journey burning 6000 calories a day. The total pedal revolutions per rider was approximately 290,000! The maximum speed reached was 50 mph, and the total elevation climbed was 47,000 ft.
The most difficult part were the hills in Exmoor where they were faced with inclines of over 20%, but the beautiful scenery and general comardarie carried them through, as well as being blessed with near perfect weather conditions. They were inspired to do the ride after loosing close friends and family to cancer and have been overwhelmed at the support they have had from local people and businesses.

For donations go to www.rawhideriders.co.uk and it will direct you to our just giving site, or see a Rawhide Rider.
They are easy to spot, they will be walking like John Wayne.

Bomford at the RHS

Imagine a garden with orchards; an arboretum; rock gardens; rose gardens; wooded areas; vegetables and much more. Now scale it up to 350 acres and open it to the public every day! That’s the scale of the task facing the team at RHS, Wisley.

RHS Garden, Wisley is constantly under the scrutiny of discerning visitors. That’s why presentation is so important. A quick way to cut the grass in an orchard is to use a skid mower but that can scalp the turf particularly in hilly or uneven ground. That’s why the Orchards team use a roller mower to get a consistent finish between the rows of different types of fruit trees covering around 15 acres, not to mention a vineyard too!
Peter Anderson, who is responsible for all the machinery on site, arranged an immediate demonstration of a brand new roller mower from Bomford. In Peter’s words, it was love at first sight! The Bomford RM2400 is wider than the previous machine, which means they can cut between the trees with just one pass, not two. That saves a lot of time when there’s so much to look after. What’s more, it leaves an impressive finish with a height of cut that is easily adjusted to suit growing conditions.

As an engineer, Peter was impressed by a number of features on the Bomford, which he believes will reduce the amount of maintenance required. For example, when trees are pruned, the pulveriser mower that follows inevitably misses some bits of timber. These sometimes damage the blades of the roller mower. However, the tips of the blades on the Bomford are flexible and with the added advantage of belt rather than shaft drive this mower should be less susceptible to damage. In addition, on some of the other mowers he considered, height adjustment was complicated and would probably require setting by a workshop technician rather than the operator. As it is, the operators can change the working height of the Bomford in the orchard, using its simple, quick-adjust presets.
