The Bomford Family Tree
The Bomford Story is essentially a personal one. It is based on the enthusiasms,
abilities, and characters of many individuals - members of the Bomford and related
families, their friends, acquaintances and employees. It reflects not only on the
developments in technology from the mid-nineteenth century onwards, but also changes
in the structure of British farming and the social and economic structure as
a whole. Above all, however, it is the personal qualities of those concerned which
shaped the history of the company and give this account of its development, its
interest and appeal.
The Bomfords have been farmers and landowners in Worcestershire for centuries, which
was started by Benjamin Bomford, who was born in 1823 at Atch Lench. He first farmed
near Bromsgrove at Dodford Priory but when he was 29 he sold that farm and bought
Pitchill. In Due course he owned and farmed about 1200 acres, including another
farm called Morton Wood. Like Many gentlemen of his time, Benjamin had a large family
by todays standards. The two of his ten children with whom we are most soncerned
are Raymond and Benjamin junior, born in 1855 and 1856 respectively, and thus still
very young when their father bought his first set of steam ploughing tackle in 1864.
This set the foundations for the Bomford Standard in Quality and Performance of
the machines you see today.
